Afghan Regions

and Provinces

This page divides the regions of Afghanistan according to the six regional commands designated by the U.S. and Its NATO Allies (ISAF) during their operations in Afghanistan after the fall of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in 2001. These divisions are artificial and do not account for traditionally recognized regions like Loya Kandahar and Loya Paktiya.

A seventh region is labeled "The Tribal Areas." It includes the two Pakistani provinces of Baluchistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly the Northwest Frontier Province [NWFP]), as well as the seven tribal agencies of the Federally Administered Tribal Agencies or the FATA, which merged with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2018. Both Baluchistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been added because many Afghans consider Quetta and Peshawar to be Afghan cities.
